2D Drawing

From 2019 to 2020, I took an AP Studio art course, focusing on creating a 2D Drawing portfolio this time. The portfolio consists of 10 drawings that portray my concentration statement.

"My sustained investigation shows evidence of practice, experimentation, and revision that was guided by my questions. One of the main things someone experiences when suffering from anxiety is being overwhelmed by thoughts. So throughout my pieces, I used anemone flowers as symbolism to represent the toxicity of thoughts, and how they (ironically) spread like weeds. Since anxiety is a mental illness, it’s not clearly seen, like a physical illness, by others except for the victim. Ultimately the victim’s facade hides the pain beneath the mask. When diagnosed, pills can be used to numb the pain, but it’s not enough to stop the victim from drowning themselves in their own thoughts. For them to be able to move forward, they have to accept they are the only one who can allow change to occur. Lighting was crucial in all of my pieces. Whether the lighting was directly on myself in the pieces, or from another direction, it provided emphasis on the subject. I used it to highlight the fact that anxiety can’t directly be seen by others. I used it as a spotlight to illustrate paranoia. I also used it to create the feel of water, which was an important aspect of my topic. I used myself as the subject in my pieces. Because anxiety is a mental illness, those who don’t experience it, don’t have the full picture, which leaves it up for interpretation."
